This past year, I spent an unusual amount of time listening to people argue about garbage collection.
In one small town, the municipality floated the idea of moving to twice-weekly pickup. Residents—many of them seasonal cottagers—were opening tax bills north of $8,000. Somewhere in that town, a councillor was almost certainly getting a legover and having a very productive hotel room conversation with someone from waste management.
Another city was going in the opposite direction—moving to bi-weekly garbage pickup. (Every two weeks) Cue the outrage. Town halls filled up. The mayor gets yelled at. Councillors get voted out.
In the case of the latter, here’s where politicians often blow it: instead of focusing on cost, they to climate change messaging. The result? Lost elections and climate progress pushed backward.
But let’s be honest—what are people really mad about?
They’ll say:
Government overreach
Higher taxes
Composting Stink
But none of that is the real issue.
People are mad about change.
Change to their weekly routine.
Change to how things are sorted.
Change to where garbage goes—and when.
People hate change.
They love constants.
This is where your podcast comes in.
Is your podcast garbage?
If you want the blunt answer, book time with me and I’ll tell you.
But if you’re thinking about podcast growth in 2026, here’s what actually matters:
Consistency is the easiest podcast growth hack.
There is no “best day” or “best time” to release an episode—only a consistent one.Release on schedule. Every time.
Late episodes train audiences not to care.Match the promise to the content.
If your podcast is about widgets, talk about widgets. Not vibes. Not tangents. Widgets.
Audiences will forgive a lot.
They don’t have time for unpredictability or the root causes of why you are changing their schedule. It’s not about you. It’s about the listener.
People are passionate about garbage collection because it’s dependable.
Your podcast should be too.

Best Thing I Listened To This Week
My good friend Nat Lauzon launched her podcast called Feedbag. It reminds me a lot of the Nat Lauzon conversations I would hear in the hallway when I worked with her at Mix 96 way back at the turn of the century. She is going to be a guest on the show in the upcoming weeks.
Kinda sorta related to the conversation I had with Kendall Breitman on the Sound Off Podcast - but Nat is hosting her show on Riverside.fm -
Don’t forget, I also host the Podcast Superfriends with my pals Jag in Detroit, Johnny Podcasts, Catherine O, and David Yas. We will be playing a round of Buy, Sell or Hold with some of my favourite predictions. Join us January 6, at 5pm Eastern on YouTube.
I did some start up voice work for a station in the USA that has no completed their format flip - so I won’t go into detail about it. So if you are driving through Kentucky and you hear me - that’s me.
