The Joy and Cringe of Failure

Sometimes its amusing, but often it is cringe.

The Joy and Cringe of Failure

I have a Spanish Food Guide which has recommendations for about 50 some odd restaurants and tapas bars I love in Spain. Each one of these restaurants has their own process to get in. Sometimes it’s an email reservation, other times you line up. But more often than not when you don’t know what the process is - my advice is to seek out the person who is large and in charge. This person is often dressed differently than the other staff and carrying a notepad. The fun begins when tourists line up without a reservation or getting on the list. They often walk past the throngs of people outside, only to get chased out by the person large and in charge.

If you are a tourist in a foreign land and don’t understand how something works, just ask someone who has been there before. Or even better, someone local.

Logrono is the tapas capital of Spain. There are two streets and it’s a giant tapas crawl. Each restaurant specializes in one dish.

I wish new podcasters would do the same. I was at the Soundwave Summit in Toronto where I gave a presentation about podcast audience building with Sarah Burke from the Women in Media Network.

Here’s What I Found At the Mixer Afterward

  • A business coach who couldn’t figure out why his show wasn’t growing. The show was on YouTube, and Spotify for Podcasters with no RSS feed. Not on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music or anywhere else.

  • Podcasters with products to sell and no website for their show.

  • “I can record with my phone and it will be fine. The content is more important than the Audio Quality.”

Listen, we don’t know what we don’t know. I’ve failed at getting into some of Barcelona’s best spots on my first try, but I managed to get it right. My ten years in podcasting has also featured mistakes that needed assistance in the form of production and editing, and getting episodes optimized for a great listen. Again,if you don’t know - just ask.

500 Episodes of the Sound Off Podcast

In my 500th episode, I shared a lot of the things I have learned over 500 episodes. I spent a few weeks wondering how much of a big deal I should make about 500 with the audience. But in the end I decided that the only person I should make it a big deal to… is myself. Thanks to everyone who sent me a note of congratulations. It is very much appreciated.

The Buffalo Sabres season in a podcast Graphic

The Buffalo Sabres have been largely terrible for the last 15 years. However this year they turned it around. One of the podcasts in our network is called 2 Goalies 1 Mic. Duane Steinel is the host and after Sabres game he does a post-game report. As you can imagine, the show’s audience numbers have been consistent over time. But check out the action this year. People love winning. The previous year is in red.

Best Thing I Listened To This Week

My fellow Podcast Superfriend David Yas does a podcast called Top Ten Time Machine and he and his co-host Michael Wolfe. They went over the mainstream rock chart from 1989 which was peak hair pop-rock. It was something we all put up with until Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit blew that genre off the radio. The show starts with Def Leppard’s Armageddon It and the show gets better as the music degenerates. I think I loved the episode so much because these were some of the first songs I got to play when I got into radio.

New Rates to Have Matt Cundill Appear on your Show

The price remains zero. I mention this because I reached out to ask someone to come on my show and they wanted money to do that. No. Never. Bye.

If you are listening to podcasts in Canada and you hear an ad about household safety in the Northwest Territories - that is my voice telling you to do smart things like be prepared.
